SMUG meeting Nov-9-2011

Great meeting at Noel's place! Only 3 of us. Pizza disappeared!

Jim Everett had some great questions and a dilemna. He was trying to decide whether to get a blue-ray player recommended to him by a friend to (obviously) play Blu-Ray and standard DVDs, but to ALSO download for rent HD content.

His problem, he thinks he is on slow DSL. Our meeting conversations included how to test the speed of your broadband connection (speedtest.com), what alternatives are available (comcast cable, wave cable, forget satellite, Verizon 4G cell service, etc) and at what prices (best to call) and whether he should get an Apple TV2 instead or in combination with the Blu-Ray player.

He also didn't know if his 2-Wire router connection to DSL also contained Wi-Fi. To discover the answer, he was advised to run on the wifi of his Mac and see if it picked up any signals. If so, not the names of the signals and see if any began with the name 2WIRE plus a 3-digit number. Take a look at the bottom of the 2-Wire modem/router and examine the serial number. If the lst 3 digits of the serial number match any of the 2WIRExxx signals, then he has a WiFi router. Now all he needs to do is select that WiFi signal for connection and enter the 2Wire WiFi password which is a 10-digit number in square brackets on the bottom of the modem/router. Record this information for later use when setting up the Blu-Ray or Apple TV2 internet connection.

That's all for today. Thanks for listening!
