iCal and the iCloud

Something happened on the way to informing the members of the Sierragate Mac Users Group about our upcoming meeting.

Last month I upgraded to iCloud as millions of other Mac OS users have done. Everything went fairly smoothly, including the movement of my iCal calendars from MobileMe to iCloud. However, it later came to my attention that there was a glitch. (Thanks, Ed, for pointing it out.)

Among all my iCal calendars i have one spcifically made for our user group, entitled SMUG. This calendar reflects our monthly meetings, there times and the location at which it will be held. This month, because of the weather ORIGINALLY predicted to be cold and wet (it will still be cold) the venue was changed to our alternate location where we can stay warm(er) and dry. I reflected the change in the calendar notes then proceeded to notify everyone of the change via email.

This is when I found out something interesting, as Ed had notified me.

Everyone who subscribed to the calendar didn’t get the change!

As it turns out, when my calendars shifted from MobileMe to iCloud, their URLs changed along with the change of Apple servers. Thus, everyone who had subscribed to the SMUG calendar still had their iCal refreshing to the OLD Calendar on the MobileMe servers. Because I didn’t know of the URL change, I erroneously continued to show the OLD URL in the SMUG Administrator’s signature block. Thus, whenever someone clicked on the calendar link to resubscribe, they were taken to the old, MobileMe calendar site.

I have since corrected this mistake. The PROPER URL is now reflected in the signature block. To subscribe to the NEW iCloud-based calendar:

1: Remove from iCal the old subscription to the SMUG  calendar

2. Click on the new link in the newest email sent out from the SMUG Administrator OR

click on this LONNNNNNNG link (webcal://p01-calendarws.icloud.com/ca/subscribe/1/zeEDNkIQ38ix1WR4Qlsli63zrIQG6UsQHJyNZfqW9XXz20q2C1bTBccPjjn-Tmk3UuE9_2zeDN9BhbFlh8GeVvggawXbDoJ0GmRfvq6ivCs) OR

Subscribe to the NEW SMUG CALENDAR by using copy and paste of the above link; without the parenthesis!

3. After subscribing, choose to keep Alarms and Notifications and also Auto-Refresh AT LEAST once a week.

4. Check to make sure that the entry for Sierragate MUG Meeting reflects the correct date (2nd Wednesday of the month), time (6-8pm) and Venue (Notes shows location as 10150 Indian Hill Road) and that December 14th will be the meeting date after today.

I hope this clarifies what has happened and that it will save you some pain for when you or your business moves to iCloud.
